Faculty Engagement Opportunities
Published on Wednesday, November 20, 2024
Throughout the pre-clinical years, there are many opportunities for faculty to lead small groups with medical students including Patient-Oriented Problem Solving (POPS) sessions and professionalism small groups. Faculty engagement in facilitating small group sessions plays a crucial role in the medical education process, providing students with personalized learning experiences that are difficult to achieve in larger lecture settings. Typically, the size of the small groups ranges from 5-15 students, so faculty get an opportunity to make more meaningful connections with the students.
Small group learning encourages active participation, critical thinking, and the application of knowledge to scenarios which helps to foster deeper understanding and retention. Through guided discussions, students can apply knowledge to practical scenarios, bridging the gap between classroom learning and clinical practice. This environment enhances students’ problem-solving skills and communication abilities, both of which are vital for future clinical practice.
By engaging in small group facilitation, faculty members also contribute to a culture of collaborative learning and professional development within the medical school, so I encourage you to sign up to facilitate a session if you have not done so yet!
